The private bath house of the mansion, built in the 1880s, is working again on the ground floor of the Konaki of Bey Sekeria.
In the mansions of the nineteenth century the bath was not an amenity but part of daily life. Only senior officials and great merchants had private hammams, and very few survive in Heraklion.
The hammam of the Konaki was built together with the mansion and remains in its place, its structure essentially intact.
The bath house adjoins the old kitchen of the mansion and shares its hearth. The fire that cooked also heated the water in the tank and the air that circulated through the hypocaust, beneath the floor.
The route was always the same: changing room, warm room and then the hot room with its marble basin. Inside the walls, vertical clay flues held the temperature.
The room is roofed with a lowered ribbed dome and circular openings, through which the light enters in shafts through the steam.

The ritual follows the same order in which the room was designed: a gradual adjustment to the heat, time in the steam, exfoliation, a foam wash and a final rest.
Towels, pestemal and care products are provided. The room is yours alone, for one or two guests, by appointment.

Next to the hammam is a room for massage and for face and body treatments.
Treatments can be combined with the hammam ritual or booked on their own.

Good to know
The hammam is reached from the ground floor of the mansion.
We suggest a light meal well beforehand and plenty of water afterwards.
The hammam is not advisable in cases of cardiovascular conditions, high blood pressure, pregnancy or acute infection. If you have any health concern, please consult your doctor before visiting and let us know when you book.
